The Twelve Days of Easter

Window of Meaning
Christmas has advent, but Lent doesn’t lend itself so well to children’s activities (and 40 days is a looong in kid time), so I’m inventing The Twelve Days of Easter.   Actually, I’m expanding on an idea from one of the few Christian branded items that is actually a cool tool.  I’m talking about Resurrection Eggs*–those plastic eggs each containing a different symbol telling the story of Easter.  Since there’s a dozen of them (they come in a nifty egg carton), the accompanying booklet suggests opening an egg a day (advent calendar style) to focus on a different aspect of the Easter story in the two weeks preceding Resurrection Sunday.

Being the collector of media that I am (especially children’s books and movies), I have accumulated a lot of Easter themed items for the children.  It’s not as extensive as my Advent-ure box, but there is enough to give the girls a different book or movie for each of The Twelve Days of Easter.  We will also do egg art and other crafts (hopefully).  Since I just came up with this, I was a day behind, so I gave them the two books and two movies which are Easter-themed but actually have nothing to do with the actual Christian holiday.  I like to wear those out before I get to the good stuff!  We will also open two eggs tonight.

Here are the contents of our Easter treasure box (wish we had a giant egg shaped box to keep them in!):

In addition to the New Testament, we are also  reading various renditions of the story of Moses and the exodus from Egypt as part of our homeschooling history (we’re studying ancient civilizations) to coincide with Passover, which is also inextricably linked to Easter, and has a special significance to Jewish Christians (not an oxymoron!).

(*We have the older version of Resurrection Eggs which are currently only $6.99 here or you can make your own.)
